Be A Good Sport

My high school football coach taught us to walk a fine line between being a good sport and a bad sport. He didn’t want us to be bad sports but he did want us to be as close to the line as possible. I suppose he was thinking that the truly nice guys never win. As a result we were a pretty fierce team, always looking for the unsuspecting person to lay a surprise hit on.

I’ve been on the other side as well. I have vivid memories of playing against teams that were better at walking the thin line of sportsmanship. Funny thing, however, to this day I have little respect for them, especially if their questionable tactics resulted in winning the game.

As a leader it is better to be respected than it is to be feared. Today, despite my coach’s influence, I try to play within the rules. A win on those terms is far more rewarding than by taking “cheap shots.”
