Have you ever been asked for an opinion but afraid to respond? I'm sure it wasn't because you didn't have one. More than likely you were afraid to risk expressing something unpopular.

Leading is about taking a position. So, if someone asks where you stand on a certain issue, let them know. The only way to lose in that situation is to not take a stand at all. If you do this too often, people around you will begin to think you're unable to be your own person.

When people are looking to chose a leader, they will look for someone with convictions. Therefore, when the chance presents itself, don't hold back. Take a position and be a leader.
