Being a Leader Is Not a Popularity Contest

Not all decisions are easy. If they were, we wouldn’t need leaders? Everyone would agree and that would be that. Being a leader is about making decisions even at the risk of being unpopular. Some leaders believe that a sign of leading well is being liked by staff. Not so. Resistance to leadership is common. Consider a quote from the book, Leadership Lessons from Attila the Hun by Wess Roberts.

“As a Chieftain achieves greater success, the jealousy others feel for him intensifies.”

Whether from jealousy or just a natural reaction to change, resistance is a common occurrence. Remember, however, that just because you’re feeling resistance, doesn’t mean you’re making the wrong decisions.

Leadership is not about making the popular choices; it’s about making the right choices.
