Be an Ambassador
One day I was standing in line waiting to buy coffee. My company logo was visible. The coffee attendant recognized the symbol and began asking questions about how to get into the field. Had the logo not been visible, the conversation would have been about the weather or some other non specific topic. Instead, it became an opportunity to share about my profession. I was being an ambassador.
On another day I was talking with a friend about how angry he would get when driving on busy city freeways. It would make him so mad when people cut him off as they switched back and forth between lanes or sped around him in the slow lane just to get one car length ahead. When he found himself in those situations his anger would rise to the point where he would want to retaliate. What made him stop? It was the Christian fish symbol he displayed on his rear bumper. Being an ambassador for Christ made him stop and think before he reached the point of retaliation.
Of course, displaying a logo or wearing a symbol can draw some criticism. Certain titles or represented positions can attract even greater criticism. For instance, when we know someone is very religious and we catch him or her in an action that goes counter to his or her religious beliefs, we are quick to call him a hypocrite.
To avoid criticism we often avoid declaring our title, position or belief, or wearing a symbol. That way we can continue to act or behave in any manner we choose. However, hiding who you are is not always possible or appropriate. Being a leader is about declaring and standing up for who you are or what you represent. And as such, you will receive your share of criticism.
So how does one handle the critic? The first line of defense is to make sure you truly believe in who you are and what you represent. If you can’t, get out and go somewhere else. You’re not doing yourself or others any favors by sticking around. If you do, stand up tall and be proud. As a leader you must be willing share your thoughts and beliefs. Don’t be afraid to wear the company logo.
Be an ambassador.
